There are three types of interpretation

Consecutive Interpretation

  • The speaker and interpreter take turns speaking.
  • The speaker speaks in segments, which are translated during pauses .

Simultaneous Interpretation

  • The speaker and interpreter speak at the same time.
  • The interpretation reaches the listener through a headset. Used mostly at conferences.

Chuchotage (Whispering)

  • The speaker and interpreter speak at the same time.
  • There is no equipment used; the interpreter sits next to the persons needing interpretation and translates directly.

3 suggestions for a successful interpretation

  1. Choose the method of interpretation that fits your event
  2. Give the interpreter access to the materials a few days before your event to clarify vocabulary and terminology.
  3. Collaboration with the speaker ensures the best results: for example, a simultaneous interpretation works best with shorter sentences from the speaker but a consecutive translation means the speaker must speak in segments.
